Deany Laliotis, LICSW, is the co-chair of the Council of Scholars. She is currently the Founder and Director of The Center for Excellence in EMDR Therapy, offering a full range of EMDR training from Basic through Master courses. Deany specializes in complex developmental trauma and teaches Relational EMDR Therapy (RET) as an attachment-focused EMDR psychotherapy. Previously, Deany was the training Director for Francine Shapiro and EMDR Institute. She has published several articles and book chapters on EMDR therapy, most recently on the Life Stress Protocol in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research. Deany received EMDRIA’s Francine Shapiro Award for Outstanding Service and Contribution in 2015. She currently lives and works in Washington, DC with her husband and co-director, Dan Merlis. Suzy Matthijssen, PhD is the co-chair of the Council of Scholars. She is a clinical psychologist-psychotherapist, senior researcher, CBT & EMDR supervisor, psychotrauma therapist NtVP, EFT therapist and NRGD registered pro justice reporter. She is the director of the Altrecht Academic Anxiety Centre where she is also the head of research and the head of an intensive trauma treatment program and an expert leader on PTSD. Connected to Utrecht University she is involved in research on the enhancement of trauma therapy, intensive trauma treatments and working mechanisms of trauma therapy. Also, Suzy is a lecturer at university and postdoctoral psychology specialization programs. She is the vice president of the Dutch EMDR association and is a member of the scientific committee of EMDR Europe. Ad de Jongh, Ph.D. is vice-chair of the research working group. He is a clinical psychologist, professor of anxiety and behavior disorders at the University of Amsterdam, honorary professor in psychology at the School of Health Sciences of Salford University in Manchester, at the Institute of Health and Society of the University of Worcester, and at the School of Psychology of Queen’s University in Belfast. Also, he is an approved trainer for the EMDR Europe association, head of the research department of the Dutch Psychotrauma Expertise Center (PSYTREC), and involved in many research projects on the effectiveness of evidence-based, trauma-focused treatments for a wide variety of patient groups. In 2011 he received the EMDRIA outstanding EMDR Research award, and in 2019 the David Serban Schreiber Award for his contribution to the foundation of the EMDR Europe Association. Ad (co-)authored more than 400 scientific articles/book chapters and 6 books on his areas of expertise. He lives in Bilthoven, The Netherlands.

Derek is current President of Trauma Aid Europe & Trauma Response Network Ireland, and is a Scientific Advisor to the Board of Trauma Aid Germany. IN recognition of his endeavours Derek is a recipient of the David Servan-Schreiber Award & the Trauma Aid Europe Humanitarian Award for outstanding contribution for Trauma Capacity Building. Dr. Hofmann lives in Bergisch Gladbach near Cologne, Germany. He is founder of the EMDR-Institute Germany and one of the heads of the EMDR Trauma Hospital in Wesseling (Germany). He learned EMDR in 1991 from Francine Shapiro and introduced it in the German speaking countries. Dr. Hofmann is co-founding board member of EMDR Europe, a co-founder of the German speaking Society of Traumatic Stress Disorders (DeGPT), a co-founder of the NGO Trauma Aid Germany and a member of the German national guideline commission on PTSD. Dr. Hofmann lives in Bergisch Gladbach, a town near Cologne, Germany. He is teaching, researching and publishing in the field of psychological trauma, depression and EMDR. He has been teaching at the Universities of Cologne, Boston University and Peking University. Lorraine Knibbs, is an educator and senior lecturer in master degree programmes on counseling and psychotherapy practice in the United Kingdom (UK). She has taught, trained and supervised nationally and internationally including on EMDR humanitarian projects in Poland, Greece and the Middle East. Lorraine is a Past President of the EMDR Association UK and Ireland, Vice President of Trauma Aid Europe (TAE) and a founding member of the Global Initiative for Stress and Trauma Treatment (GIST-T). She is a member of the Council of Scholars (CoS) Future of EMDR Therapy Project (FOET) Steering Committee and a Vice Chair of the working committees exploring EMDR training and credentialing. The FOET Project examines the field of EMDR therapy and seeks to build a cogent and curated body of knowledge, with regard, to EMDR therapy and work on developing global standards for training and competency which are objective and informed. Marilyn Luber, PhD is a licensed, clinical psychologist in private practice in Philadelphia, She was on the Founding Board of Directors of EMDRIA and an EMDR Task Force for Dissociative Disorders member. She has conducted training both nationally and internationally. She is a co-facilitator for the EMDR Global Alliance. She is on the Steering Committee for the Future of EMDR Therapy Project, on the Council of Scholars, and chair of the “What is EMDR” working group. She received HAP’s Humanitarian Services Award (1997), Outstanding Contribution to EMDRIA award (2003) and EMDRIA’s Francine Shapiro Award (2005). In 2001, HAP published, Handbook for EMDR Clients-translated into eight languages. She edited seven books for Springer’s EMDR Scripted Protocol series. She co-authored Dr. Shapiro’s 2009 interview for the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research) and wrote Dr. Shapiro’s entry for E.S. Neukrug’s, 2015, The SAGE Encyclopedia of Theory in Counseling and Psychotherapy. Mark Nickerson, LICSW, is chair of the Clinical Practice Group within the Council of Scholars. He is an EMDR Institute Trainer and has served as President of the EMDR International Association Board. He is editor/author of Cultural Competence and Healing Culturally Based Trauma with EMDR Therapy (Springer, 2016) and The Wounds Within (Skyhorse, 2015), an expose on the challenges for war veterans and their families. He presents, consults, and conducts trainings nationally and internationally on a range of topics related to EMDR therapy and trauma-informed treatment. Karen Alter-Reid, Ph.D. is a member of the “What is EMDR” working group. She is a clinical psychologist with specialties in trans-generational trauma and first responder treatment. Karen is a Regional EMDR Institute Trainer, an R-TEP/G-TEP Trainer, Specialty Presenter and Senior EMDR Consultant and Trainer for the Integrative Trauma Program at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in NYC. She has presented at the EMDRIA conference on the impact of trans-generational trauma, on her “Therapy for Therapists” program, and her clinical work following the Sandy Hook shooting. Professor Ian Barron, D.Ed.Psy is the Director of the Center for International Education (CIE), University of Massachusetts, and Founding Director of the International Center for Child Trauma Prevention and Recovery (ICCTPR), and the Trauma Response Network (TRN). The latter coordinates the UK EMDR response to the pandemic, terrorist attacks, and disasters. Dr Barron’s 15 years of low-intensity trauma-specific research projects are captured in a Research Excellence Framework (REF) Impact Case Study that has been recognized as outstanding and world leading. She is the clinical director of the Child Trauma Therapy Centre in Shropshire, England and has over 20 years experience in providing child-led trauma therapy and clinical supervision to hospital trusts and organisations. Sarah is a clinical psychologist and an EMDRAA accredited consultant and trainer she is also a member of the Council of Scholars Training and Accreditation workgroup. In her clinical work, she sees people with a range of moderate to severe mental health difficulties, including those with depression, eating disorders, and complex posttraumatic stress disorder. Her clinical work is guided by a trauma-informed approach, and interventions are delivered using EMDR, schema therapy and imagery rescripting.
Sarah strongly supports equitable access to the highest quality consultation and training. Her training is experiential, and her work is directed by the current evidence - along with ample doses of compassion and insight - to help others to support their clients on their road to wellness. He became active in EMDR very early in his career in 1989, after attending one of Francine Shapiro’s first ever trainings (then called EMD), and later served as an EMDR Institute Facilitator. He was a Charter member of EMDRIA and one of the founding members of EMDR Europe and of EMDR Israel. In 2003, he was elected Secretary of the EMDR Europe Executive Committee and Board, serving two terms until 2011. He received the EMDR Europe Association 2016 David Servan Schreiber Award for his outstanding contribution to EMDR therapy, in the development of the Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol (R-TEP in 2008) together with Brurit Laub, with its variation of the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP in 2013). This has contributed to boosting interest, research and innovation in the field over the last decade. He has given over 100 presentations and training seminars held worldwide, written and co-written over 20 articles on Early EMDR Intervention topics, and continues to write, teach, research and present on developments and refinements of the protocols in the treatment of recent trauma.

Nancy J. Smyth is professor at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Social Work, where she served as dean from 2004-2021. She has 35+ years of experience as a social worker, educator, leader, and innovator. Smyth is President Elect of the Network for Social Work Management, Leadership Council Member of the Grand Challenges for Social Work, and Advisory Board member for the national Social Work Health Futures Lab (funded, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation). Her current work focuses on teaching with digital technology and technology for social good. Smyth is an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and taught EMDR at the University at Buffalo from 1998-2004. Smyth’s past work focused on trauma and substance abuse, including the use of treatment innovative approaches like EMDR and mindfulness meditation, including working on multiple NIH-funded research studies with PIs Gerard Connors, Christopher Barrick, Brenda Miller, and Bessel van der Kolk.

Jonas Tesarz
Jonas Tesarz is a dual specialist in internal medicine and in psychosomatic medicine. He currently works as managing senior physician and associate professor at Heidelberg University Hospital, Department of General Internal Medicine and Psychosomatics. He is accredited by EMDR Europe as an EMDR Consultant. Trained also in psychodynamic psychotherapy, manual therapy as well as anesthesiological pain management techniques, he integrates somatic and psychological approaches to pain management. He is co-chair of the "EMDR Research" working group and combines clinical activity with research. After completing his PhD at the University of Heidelberg on the neurobiology of pain processing, he initially focused on researching the role of myofascial tissue in the development and maintenance of low back pain before starting his clinical practice at the Department of General Internal Medicine and Psychosomatics (Division of Musculoskeletal Pain) at the University of Heidelberg. There he habilitated on the influence of biopsychosocial factors on chronic pain. In addition to researching the influence of traumatic life events on pain processing, his particular scientific interest lies in the development and scientific evaluation of novel psychological treatment approaches for the treatment of chronic pain conditions. Tesarz has been conducting research and publishing internationally in the field of pain research for many years and is author and editor of numerous books in the field of pain medicine and psychotherapy. For his work on the influence of psychological trauma on pain, he received the "German Prize for Pain Research" and the Günter-Jantschek Research Prize for Psychosomatic Research in Internal Medicine.

Juliane Tortes Saint-Jammes is a member of the "What is EMDR" working group. She is a psychotherapist, psychotraumatologist, specializing in the care of victims of sexual violence. She directs the CAMEA psychotramatology consultation center in Bordeaux, France .Practitioner, consultant and EMDR Europe facilitator, she accompanies future EMDR practitioners during their basic training, she is also an R-TEP trainer. Trained in attachment theory, systemic therapy, schema therapy, sensory-motor therapy, and brainspotting, she is also a trainer on the issues of attachment, pain and complex PTSD and their treatment by EMDR psychotherapy.
She is a member of the research team of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research and works on the prevention and treatment of trauma. She is also the coordinator of the Research Team of the Emergency Medical and Psychological Unit, and her work is focused on emergency psychotraumatology in order to prevent stress pathologies through EMDR.
Juliane has presented her clinical and research work at the EMDR Europe Congress in Edinburgh, Strasbourg, and EMDR Virtual 2021 as well as at the EMDRIA Congress in 2019 and at the EMDR France Congress.
